Point of Sale Activated (POSA) Gift cards can be open loop or closed loop and can have fixed amounts or variable amounts. Most cards have a magstripe and a barcode. Either can be used for activation.
Closed loop cards are gift cards that can only be redeemed at specifically branded stores, e.g. Subway. Open loop cards are those that can be redeemed at most retail stores, e.g. Visa. Open loop card typically have a customer fee associated with them that need to be charged in addition to the load value.
Fixed amount cards are those that have a specific single denomination. Variable cards are those that a customer can add any amount between a minimum and a maximum.
POSA Gift Cards only support activation, no reload or reversal is allowed.

Steps to purchase include:
1. Clerk swipes the card magstripe through the reader or clerk uses barcode scanner on the long barcode from the back of the card.
2. Confirmation screen to validate product and denomination.
3. Voucher prints with product name, amount, masked card # for reference, instructions, terms and conditions etc.

Closed loop cards of this type are those where the customer can choose to load any amount within a pre-set range to the card .
Examples of this GUI would be Best Buy $25-$500, or Visa $25-$500 + $6.95 fee.
Steps to purchase include:
1. Clerk swipes the card magstripe through the reader or clerk uses barcode scanner on the long barcode from the back of the card.
2. Clerk collect the retail value (load plus fee, plus any applicable taxes) from the customer.
e.g. If loading $55 to a Visa card, amount collected is $55 + $6.95 + $0.70 taxes.
3. Clerk is prompted to enter the load amount the customer wants to the card, e.g. $55.
4. Confirmation screen to validate product and card load amount.
5. Voucher prints with product name, load amount, masked card number for reference, instructions, term and conditions, etc.
